NIH Charities
Anyone who is familiar with NIH knows it is a community, not only in the sense that it has its
own police and fire departments, but in the way that the employees take pride in their workplace
and care about one another. Therefore it should not be surprising that there are three charity
organizations to serve NIH patients and their families, each founded and/or largely supported by
NIH employees. The charities are: The Children's Inn at NIH, a home-like facility where NIH
pediatric patients and their families can stay while the child undergoes treatment; Friends of the
Clinical Center, which provides emergency financial aid to NIH patients and their families; and
Special Love Inc./Camp Fantastic, which provides a week-long summer camp and many other
programs for children and young adults with cancer and their families.
The R&W Foundation was formed to act as an important link between the employees of NIH and
the three charities that serve the NIH patient community. The Foundation is an offshoot of the
Recreation and Welfare Association (R&W) of NIH, a nonprofit association that has been
serving the NIH community since 1945. The Foundation's funds enable the staff of the R&W to assist in management, operation, and fundraising for the three NIH charities.
