What is ERWA?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Recreation and Welfare Association (ERWA) is a non-profit organization created to promote and sponsor those cultural, educational, recreational, social, welfare and related membership activities that accrue benefits to improve employee morale.

Where is ERWA located?

ERWA has two offices at the following locations:

Germantown Main Building (GTN) in the cafeteria lobby, phone number 301-903-5440, email address  ERWA@hq.doe.gov.

Forrestal Building (FORS), Room GE-039, phone number 202-586-0330, e-mail address ERWAFORS@hq.doe.gov.

Manned by volunteers, the shops are open one to several days a week, normally 11:30a.m.-1:30 p.m.  Both shops offer discount tickets, DOE logo clothing and other items, used books, jigsaw puzzles, and CD’s for sale; pamphlets and brochures with discount offers from hotels, entertainment areas, and other activities near vacation areas.  The ERWA Shops are a source of information for all ERWA activities.

Who may join ERWA?

All persons who are employed by or on behalf of, or retired from DOE are eligible to join ERWA, receive membership benefits and privileges, vote in elections and membership meetings, vote for referenda, hold office, and chair any ERWA committee or function.

How Does ERWA Work?

ERWA was established under the former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1947, and currently serves the entire DOE Headquarters complex.  ERWA has had a longstanding affiliation with the Employee Services Management Association (ESM), formerly NESRA.  ERWA is supported  by volunteers and has no paid employees.  Revenue for our activities comes from membership fees, rent received from the GTN barber shop and from vendors in both FORS and GTN lobbies.
