The NIH R&W now offers a
Supplemental Group Disability Program
 to all employees working at
NIH, NOAA & HHS

Disability options under your current benefits are limited to annual leave and disability retirement.

There are distinct gaps in your federal benefits that can threaten your TSP due to a loss of income.  If you are unable to work due to an illness or injury, your options begin with your leave, and, if you qualify disability retirement.  While these benefits can offer you a base of coverage they often times fall well short.

The R&W’s supplemental disability program can help close those gaps in your benefit programs.  Our program, underwritten by Met Life, offers guaranteed acceptance and low group rates.  Highlights include:

·         Three plan options to meet everyone’s needs.

·         Return to work services.

·         Vocational and Rehabilitative training.

To learn more about this valuable insurance program, contact fedADVANTAGE at 1-866-973-6868 or ltd@fedadvantage.com.

Volunteers Needed for Recording
For the Blind and Dyslexic

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) is a national nonprofit volunteer organization that provides recorded textbooks to people who cannot read the printed word because of a visual, learning or other disability.  Our students learn by listening to recordings of their textbooks.  We get many requests for recording scientific and technical books, and it is difficult to find readers with expertise in these areas, especially Anatomy, Microbiology, and Biochemistry.  With the help of the Office of Equal Opportunity, we have installed a studio in Bldg. 31 on the main NIH campus, so NIH employees can volunteer during the day or before and after work.  NIH scientists, researchers, and the others with science knowledge volunteer to read for at least one hour per week, as their schedule permits.  This is an opportunity to provide a much-needed service to future scientists who just might end up working at NIH or becoming grantees.  If you are interested in volunteering, contact Kathryn Sparks at 202-244-8990 or ksparks@rfbd.org.  For more info visit www.rfbd.org.

Food Drive to Benefit
The Children’s Inn at NIH

The NIH Academy is sponsoring a campus wide food drive to benefit families staying in the Children's Inn.  Many families come to NIH during the summer, when many children are out of school.  Help us make their stay more comfortable and affordable.  Drop off canned or boxed foods in designated food drive boxes between Monday, June 1st and Monday, June 15th.  Requested items include: white rice, canned vegetables and soups, healthy snack size items, single serving size cereals, fruit cups, juice boxes, bottled water and cooking spices (especially international spices).  In addition, donated gift cards of $25 or more from any grocery store are welcome and can be dropped off at any R&W store.  This enables families to select food items of their choice.  Food drive boxes are located near the R&W stores in, or the entrances of, the following locations: Bldg. 2, Bldg. 4, Bldg. 10 (North Entrance, South Entrance, B1 Cafeteria, and 2nd Floor Cafeteria), Bldg. 31 (Cafeteria and parking lot), Bldg. 35, Bldg. 40, Bldg. 49, and Bldg. 50

Jersey Boys at the National Theatre

Discover the secret of a 40-year friendship.  Four blue-collar kids, working their way from the streets of Newark to the heights of stardom, become one of the greatest successes in pop music history.  They wrote their own songs, invented their own sound and sold 175 million records worldwide, all before they were thirty!  The 2006 Tony® Award-winning best musical takes you up the charts, across the country and behind the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.  Experience electrifying performances of the hits that took these guys all the way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," "Oh What a Night," "Can't Take My Eyes off You" and many more.  The R&W has Orchestra tickets to the 7:30pm performance on Thursday, November 5th at the National Theatre.  See page 23 for ticket prices.

Legg Mason Tennis Classic

If you LOVE tennis and feel strongly that every child should have the opportunity to benefit from the added educational and athletic participation then volunteer for the Legg Mason Tennis Classic held August 1st – August 9th!  Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation (WTEF); who, since 1955 have strived to: keep children off city streets and engaged in productive activities that instill self-pride and discipline; provide opportunities for children to improve their academic performance and help them make choices that enrich rather than endanger their lives, and provide opportunities for talented athletes to develop their tennis skills so that they can obtain college scholarships.  Contact Alexandra Manolatos, 301-402-4116 for more info or visit www.leggmasontennisclassic.com.

The NIH Farmers Market Is Back

Starting on Tuesday, June 2nd, the market will resume, from 10:30am - 1:30pm on the Bldg. 31 patio.  Licking Creek Bend Farm, from Needmore, PA, will start, featuring sorrel greens, turnips, scallions, garlic, cherries, arugula, spinach and early squash.  More produce will be brought in as the season moves on.  The farm, started in 1972 as a diaspora kibbutz, was one of the original farms that participated in the market and is expected to be joined by other vendors as we move into the fall.  Licking Creek emphasizes sustainably-grown produce sold at affordable prices!  They are certified to accept WIC and Food Stamps.  They have been selling at a Saturday morning market in Adams Morgan since 1974.  The farm is certified through a sustainable "farmer-to-farmer" certification program at Wilson College in Chambersburgh, PA.  The national program uses the "National Organic Standards Act" as its growing criteria.  Michael Tabor, the farm's owner, is a strong advocate for healthier, locally-grown food in public schools.  Licking Creek does not provide new plastic bags so please remember to bring recycled or cloth bags.  Come and show your support.  Hope to see you weekly for your fruit and veggies.  There will be no market on June 16th.

Camp Fantastic – Special Love, Inc.

Children with cancer have to grow up much too fast.  They feel different from other children and many miss out on activities that healthy children experience daily.  This was the reason Special Love was created.  Special Love programs, including Camp Fantastic, offer children with cancer the chance to jump, play, explore, laugh, swim and make friends through a community of support, made up of patients, family, and staff who know and understand the trials and triumphs of battling childhood cancer.  We need your contributions to assist Special Love in their mission. Be a phantom camper by giving a donation.  Enjoy camp without the bugs, sunburn or snoring counselors!  Here’s how you can help.

$25 sends a hug to camp
$75 sends a child to camp for the day
$150 sends a child to camp for the weekend
$300 sends a family to camp for the weekend
$600 sends a child to camp for the week

Donations are tax deductible.  Make checks payable to the R&W Foundation and send to R&W, Bldg. 31 Rm. B1W30.  Together we can make a difference in the life of a child with cancer.
