Thanks to awesome weather, and even more amazing volunteers, the NIH Bike to Work Day 2006 was a wonderful and spectacular success! For one day at least we celebrated and dramatically decorated NIH with bikes and colorful spandex. It was a beautiful site indeed!

This year NIH was recognized as an official DC Metro Area BTWD 2006 Pit-Stop, so pre-registered attendees walked away with t-shirts and water bottles. All biking attendees were rewarded with snacks, goodies bags and door prizes galore. We also collected valuable data about the most commonly used campus roadways, entrances and exits. This data will be used to further our campus advocacy efforts. All together, we had 169 attendees at main campus, 12 at Rockledge and 19 at Executive! Big kudos to Carl Henn at Executive and John Pugh at Rockledge, for stepping forward to expand the size and scope of NIH Bike to Work Day events the NIHBCC can offer.

Angela Atwood-Moore was on hand to give out breakfast and raffle prizes to those who attended by bike, in this case Keisha Shropshire.

Other key volunteers for NIH Bike to Work Day 2006 deserve special recognition and thanks: Nick Jakubovics and Cindy Walczak (website), Mary Gant, Charles Sneiderman and Janet Young (set-up, clean up, and/or tent-card tabling), Samantha Smith (mentor coordinator), Maggie Beddall (publicity), Jim Tomlin (Jim does it all), and Ellen Condon (no project is too big or too small for Ellen). Additional thanks go to our BTWD 2006 group ride leaders (John Pugh, Nick Jakubovics, Samantha Smith, Alfred Yergey, Julia Purdy and Marc Gwadz) for sharing their time and bike commuting expertise. Of course, none of the Bike Club events would be possible without the hard work and dedication of the NIH BCC president Angela Atwood-Moore.

Because of their generous support we were able to give away goodie bags and many raffle prizes including bike clothing, bike parts and this year’s grand prize: a Cannondale R500 road bike.
